What is Reiki?

If you’ve been searching for alternative medical treatments for any pain, anxiety or fatigue, reiki might be the answer. We chatted with our in-house reiki expert Stephanie Lewis and she broke down the history, benefits and what to expect during your first reiki session.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a natural energy healing practice of Japanese origin utilized to enable relaxation, improve recovery, and restore the body’s energetic flow. A Reiki practitioner guides the energy to where it is needed most for a group or individual for the purpose of cleansing and healing.

It is a very gentle, hands-on practice that promotes one’s own healing potential from the inside out. It releases old, static energy blocks carried in the body (often showing up as physical or emotional pain).

Not only a wonderful way to relax, but it also helps reduce stress levels and provides an opportunity to grow on the physical, emotional, and spiritual planes.

What to Expect

  • Each session is an hour-long.

  • The client is fully clothed (except for shoes).

  • During the session, the client is asked to lie on their back or side with bolster and blanket as needed while the practitioner’s hands move to various points of the body (administered without pressure, massage, or manipulation).

  • The client may experience any of the following reactions during the session: heat, tingling, cold, deep relaxation, drowsiness, jerking of limbs, physical manifestations of emotions (i.e. laughter, anger, or tears). All of these reactions are completely normal; it simply blocked or stagnant energy being released in different ways.

After Your Session

  • Drink lots of water for the next three days and try to avoid heavy foods/alcohol.

  • Some clients experience a “healing crisis” in the few days following a Reiki treatment which can appear as illness (a cold, mood swings, or severe exhaustion). This is temporary as the Reiki energy works its way through the body. Many clients often find multiple Reiki treatments to be of great benefit. Long-distance Reiki healing is also an option.
