Essential Oils 101
Essential oils have continued to gain popularity over the past few years. Mirepoix students often ask our teachers what oils they use during class, the brands they like and how they can use oils outside of class. We decided to sit down and speak with the founder of Mason Made Kathleen Mason and ask her to share her tips for choosing safe oils that fit your everyday needs.
How to Find the Right Oils
It's very important to purchase high-quality oils. Essential oils are not controlled by the FDA, so looking for organic ingredients should be your first step. Be mindful that many companies will use words such as ‘natural’ to describe their ingredients. ‘Natural’ doesn’t hold much weight in the oil market, so it’s important to focus on ‘organic’ ingredients instead.
Shared Mason, “You can find high-quality brands online such as Saje Natural Wellness and Aura Cacia. I use Now Organic, which are mostly single scent. I like to make my own blends and dilute them in water to make them safer to spray in my space.”
Mason also recommends visiting Whole Foods to speak with a knowledgeable associate to learn more about which oils would be right for you. She noted the strict standards that Whole Foods already has in place for all of their products, so you know that whatever you purchase is safe to spray in your environment.
Choose The Right Scent
Once you find a brand you like, you are then confronted with a plethora of scent options. So how do you know which scent to choose to fit your needs? Mason broke it down for us:
Are you looking to destress? Lavender and bergamot will provide the calming energy you need.
Do you need more balance or help with anxiety? Releasing rose, orange, lemon, geranium, cedar or pine scents into your space can help clear the air.
Looking to beat the 3:00 p.m. slump at work? Try defusing grapefruit, cedar, pine or peppermint. You can even purchase a mini diffuser for your desk or use rollers while at work!
Want to gain some instant energy? Scents like lemon, orange, ginger and grapefruit will give you the boost you need.
How To Chose the Right Mode of Release
Now that you have found the perfect scent, you can determine which is the best way for you to release the scent into your environment.
Roller: Oil rollers are applied topically. These are always diluted in carrier oils in order to make them safe to place directly onto your skin. You can use them on your wrists, ears, clavicle or neck -- anywhere your body needs it!
Spray: Oil sprays are great for refreshing fabrics, your hair, clothes or just to spray in the air for a gentle scent boost!
Diffusers: Diffusers are a great way to infuse your space with a specific scent in order to enhance relaxation, gain energy and more. Be sure to read the instructions on your diffuser to ensure you are placing the correct amount of drops into the diffuser in order to gain all the benefits. At Mirepoix, we use Vitruvi diffusers and oils!
How To Use
Here are our favorite ways to incorporate oils into our daily routine!
Yoga and essential oils go hand-and-hand. Many of our teachers offer oils at the end of class in order to create a more relaxing environment. Here are some scents you can incorporate into your daily practice:
Savasa: lavender or bergamot
Power Yoga: lemon, grapefruit or ginger
Muscle recovery: peppermint
Note: If you’d like to use oils topically that are not already diluted, be sure to dilute them with carrier oils. You can use things you have in your pantry such as coconut or apricot oil.
The shower can be the perfect place to incorporate oils in order to create a more fulfilling experience. Mason recommends placing the two or three drops of oil directly onto the front end of your tub or the base of your shower so the steam can catch it.
To create a more spa-like experience and open your sinuses use lavender or eucalyptus.
To combat cold season utilize mint, eucalyptus, peppermint or spearmint.
Roller oils are great for use on-the-go -- and their size is perfect for travel. Bring your favorite scent to the airport to create a more calming environment during those hectic times!
Now you’re ready to get started using oils in your home and on-the-go!
