5 Tips for Maintaining Your Wellness Routine While Traveling
Summer is here! That means drinking on patios, family barbecues and lots of traveling. While there’s no harm in being a bit more lenient when it comes to your wellness routine, it doesn’t mean you have to fully stray from your health goals. We broke down five tips for you to follow to stay on track while you travel during these summer months.
Pack for the Airport
Staying healthy while traveling starts at the airport. It’s easy to fall off track when you get to the airport and see all of the unhealthy food and drink options available.
First, be sure to bring a water bottle to fill it up once you’re past security. This will help you stay hydrated before, during and after your flight — and save you money. Since food options are scarce, pack your carryon with your favorite protein bars, mixed nuts or nut butters.
Pro tip: If you’re a tea drinker, bring your own tea and tumbler and ask a coffee shop for hot water. It’s free and you get to enjoy your favorite teas without settling.
Starting your journey on a healthy note will set you up for success the rest of the trip.
Prioritizing Moving Your Body
Obviously, when traveling you’re not going to be participating in your regular workout routine, but make sure regular movement is built into your schedule. Maybe you add a long hike to one day or plan to try out a local fitness studio! This will help you stay on track and maybe even find a new workout you love. It’s also a good idea to build walking into your schedule instead of Ubering everywhere! This can help you see different parts of the city that you may not have had a chance to see.
Stick To Your Morning and Evening Routines
Our routines are important to us. We are creatures of habit and keeping with our routines will help you wind down easier and be more prepared for the day. Take time for your full skincare routine each evening, take an extra few minutes to meditate in the morning, avoid screens as you wind down, take a few minutes of quiet with your coffee in the morning — doing whatever makes you feel at home will help you stay on your wellness game even when you’re on the move.
Manage Your Alcohol Intake
Drinking throughout the day is a lot easier when traveling because it’s a celebration! Although there’s nothing wrong with drinking on-the-go, it’s important to be mindful of how much and/or what you’re drinking. Maybe you avoid mimosas at brunch so you can indulge on a specialty cocktail at dinner or you simply choose vodka sodas over sugary drinks all weekend — find a balance that works for you!
Allow Yourself to Indulge
Let’s face it, everywhere you visit is going to have a delicious dessert or a can’t-miss restaurant that might not be within your standard diet. Be sure to allow yourself to indulge in these specialty foods so you can fully embrace the city you’re visiting!
No one is perfect, so don’t beat yourself up if you’re not perfect when traveling — no one is! Hopefully, these few tips can help you stay on track so it’s easier to jump back into your routine when you’re back home.
